The Commemorative Air Force Airbase Georgia, Peachtree City, GA, is joining other museums and historic sites across the state in marking the fifth anniversary of the Georgia WWII Heritage Trail, a program created to highlight Georgia’s role in World War II. Airbase Georgia was one of the original partners when the trail launched in February 2021. The network was formed to bring together organizations working to preserve and interpret the state’s wartime history, with a focus on sharing the stories of the people, places, and events tied to Georgia’s contributions during the war.

“Airbase Georgia joined the Georgia WWII Heritage Trail because of our mission to educate, honor, and inspire,” said Airbase Leader Mark Richards. “The Trail strengthens our ability to tell these stories collaboratively and to reach new audiences across the state.” Since its launch, the Georgia WWII Heritage Trail has grown beyond its original 10 partners to include a broader group of trail and affiliate organizations. The network promotes cooperation between museums and historic sites while presenting a wider picture of the state’s wartime history. It has also received recognition for its work in heritage tourism and public engagement.

As a flying museum focused on World War II aviation, Airbase Georgia contributes an aviation-focused perspective to the trail’s programming. The organization supports the effort through exhibits, aircraft restoration projects, living history events, and educational programs for K–12 students.

Airbase Georgia currently operates seven vintage aircraft that still fly and is continuing restoration work on a rare Republic P-47N Thunderbolt as well as a Boeing-Stearman N2S biplane. The Stearman, which was used to train U.S. Navy pilots during the war, is expected to make its first post-restoration flight later this year. “Airbase Georgia looks forward to continuing its role within the Georgia WWII Heritage Trail as the network enters its next chapter, expanding access to World War II history and honoring those who served,” Richards said.
